2012-13: Played for the New Jersey Hitmen in the EJEPL. He lead his team in points with 19 including 13 goals in 17 games.2013-14: Whelan played the majority of the season with the New Jersey Hitmen U16 team. He had 38 goals and 44 assists for 82 points in 30 games, which was third-most in the entire U16 USPHL Division. He also played in 4 U18 games for the Hitmen and scored 1 goal with 3 assists. In January of 2014, Whelan committed to Quinnipiac University for 2016.
