2011-12: Played in 28 games for The Governor's Academy. Had second-most points for defensemen on the team with 14. He netted 6 goals during the year.

2012-13: Joined the New Jersey Hitmen of the EJHL and had third-most points for defensemen. Costello netted 7 goals and had 15 assists in 34 regular-season games. He also picked up a team-leading 77 penalty minutes.

2013-14: Costello attended Division I Army where he picked up 1 assist in 15 games. He was a -9 rating with 10 penalty minutes.
